JobiePrinter is an epson stylus color 740 that served me well for several years; PescoPrinter pretty much obsoletes it as of Dec2003.

(PaperlessOffice)

5Sep2003: gs package got in the way of gs-esp somehow... galeon seemed to fail silently to print... but then I found the jobs in the cups completed jobs list... "aborted". gee, thanks. Found a cryptic message in the log file, put it into google, and got a clue about changing /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to set loglevel to debug. Discovered gs couldn't find the stp driver. ventured into #debian where yo_linux helped me debug. Once I removed DebianPackage:gs , all was well again (and I'd switched (upgraded?) to the gimp-print driver from stp). offered to reward yo_linux via affero but didn't hear back. oh well.

24 Apr 2003 managed to replace the cartridges by unplugging it at a point in its warm-up dance when the cartridges weren't tucked under the cover. After doing the "hold ink button for 3 seconds" it seems to be working well now.

Next time I buy cartridges, though, I'm gonna do it via LinuxPrinting's supprot for epson stylus color 740.

But now (March 2003) it's hosed. It's out of black ink and I can't change the cartridge. I used some off-brand cartridges, so my warranty, if it were still in effect, is gone.

While researching a replacement for JobiePrinter, I considered laser printers, but then I found the stylus C82. It looks like a pretty good solution to good/fast/cheap.

jobie printer configuration:

  1. install DebianPackage:pdq, DebianPackage:xpdq
  2. fill in name/location/model
  3. driver: gs-stcolor (per epson stylus color 740 entry recommends gimp-print for this; driver details wow... printing from the gimp on photo quality paper yeilds impressive results!)
  4. default driver params
  5. local port
  6. /dev/usb/lp0 (hmm... doesn't exist yet... ahh... MAKEDEV usb)

hmm... I see DebianPackage:hpoj . Perhaps WilmaPrinter? can be powered by Open Source after all!

For a while I was suffering from DebianBug:122828 : gs: Can't find font file. I worked around it ala

dirk:/usr/local/lib/ghostscript# ln -s /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts fonts

but I think it's really fixed now.
